Dwight Gordon, Prince George’s County:

The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works has recently deployed an Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) System into its fleet of snow and ice control vehicles to more effectively treat County-maintained roadways. This system includes real-time telemetry data, road-hazard identification capability, as well as a publicly available treatment tracking portal. This presentation will showcase both the system and its capabilities.

3)      Baltimore City On-Street Cycle Track

– Caitlin Doolin, Kittelson & Associates, Inc.:

Cities across the country are designing and implementing innovative bicycle facilities in streets where cars once fully occupied. A unique skillset set in on-street bicycle facility design is emerging that is necessary for engineers to continue working in transportation within a city context. Baltimore City will be constructing its first ever parking-protected, on-street cycle track on Maryland Avenue/Cathedral Street in Fall 2014 as part of the City’s Downtown Bicycle Network Project. The design of the cycle track uses the latest guiding principle’s from the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide, recently adopted by FHWA. The project also evaluated the impact on traffic operations and entailed complicated trade-offs between parking, traffic operations, and transit operations to accommodate the cycle track. This presentation will outline the guiding principles used in the design as well as an overview of how the traffic operations were evaluated to accommodate the cycle track.
